Paula is a Direct Support Professional (DSP) at our State College office. Throughout her time at Aveanna, Paula has found purpose, compassion, and joy from providing care to her clients and their families. Paula shares her inspiring journey of growth at Aveanna, which has given her a sense of purpose and fulfillment.
How long have you worked as a DSP?
I have worked as a DSP for 3 years now. I came to Aveanna after working a routine 9-5 job. Sitting at a desk for 7 years was not gratifying to me, so I decided I needed something more rewarding in my life. I needed to feel that I was helping others.
What does a typical day look like for you?
A typical day for me can consist of assisting the client with changing and transferring, playing with blocks, and spending time with them. I like when I can make my client smile or laugh because it tells me that I'm bringing joy to their life.
How do you get through challenging days?
I know my clients face challenges every day. We often take things like communication and mobility for granted. When my client finds a new way to communicate or smiles when I'm completing exercises with them, that's so rewarding to see.
What do your clients mean to you?
My clients become a big part of my life. I'm always thinking what I can do each day to bring some joy into their lives. I work with 2 wonderful nurses and my client's parents to try to make life easier and better for them.
How have you grown while part of the Aveanna team?
I feel I learn something new every day, which is very rewarding. Aveanna has provided me the opportunity to work with wonderful clients who bring joy into my life and have given me a sense of purpose in my job. I find I have more patience and empathy. I am very grateful to be given this opportunity!
