On this recent National Doctors' Day, we take a moment to express our heartfelt appreciation for the exceptional individuals who exemplify the spirit of compassionate care and unwavering dedication. Today, we spotlight Dr. Bowers, one of our esteemed hospice medical directors. Her commitment to enhancing the lives of our patients and families, coupled with her expertise in hospice care, has been a beacon of hope and comfort in our community. Dr. Bowers' tireless efforts and profound impact on the lives she touches are truly commendable. We extend our deepest gratitude for her invaluable service to Aveanna Hospice.
Dr. Bowers is a native Tennessean who attended medical school at Meharry Medical College in Nashville, TN. She is board-certified in Family Medicine, Hospice/Palliative medicine and is a certified hospice medical director. She has participated in multi-hospital ethics committees, graduate medical education trainings, and has contributed to multiple public forums in the hospice community. When asked why she loves what she does, Dr. Bowers states, “I often get the same reaction: 'oh, that must be very sad’ and my response is that I am in a position to be a shelter in the time of a storm. Whether it is trying to assuage someone’s guilt about choosing hospice or managing difficult symptoms, giving personalized care is rewarding. I often have the privilege of being the last doctor over their care. We are chosen to help walk along a path that all of us will eventually take, and I do not take my responsibility lightly.”
Dr. Bowers is a great leader, teacher, and support system. She is always willing to make a home visit, talk to a physician to discuss the best treatment plan, attend a marketing event, do community education, or walk through eligibility. She truly has the patient's and family’s care at the forefront of every decision she makes. She is truly what makes Aveanna hospice care so special. We are very thankful for her support and mentorship; we couldn’t do this without her!
