Living with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy: Hudson and Physical Therapist Nicole
Published Sept. 27, 2024

Five-year-old Hudson is goofy, energetic, and always trying to make others laugh. Hudson lives with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD), a rare genetic condition that is characterized by progressive muscle damage and weakness. Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy is caused by a genetic mutation that prevents the body from producing a protein called dystrophin, which acts as a shock absorber when muscles contract. Without dystrophin, muscles become more and more damaged and weakened. Hudson was diagnosed in January of 2022 after his parents expressed concerns with his gross motor skills.

Shortly after being diagnosed with DMD, Hudson began working with Aveanna Physical Therapist Nicole. As Hudson's primary therapist, Nicole works with him on stretching, flexibility, and other exercises to keep him as independent as possible.

"My biggest goal for Hudson is to keep him active so he can be a typical kid," said Nicole. "He starts kindergarten next year, and we want him to enjoy playing with his classmates and participating in activities in the community."

And Hudson has done just that. Over the last few months, he's participated in karate and tee-ball. PT Nicole works tirelessly to ensure he can be a kid without limits. In the two years that Nicole has worked with Hudson, he's made great improvements in his endurance and flexibility. His family has seen this progress firsthand.

"Our family is so thankful for Aveanna and Ms. Nicole," said Hudson's mom. "Being able to do Hudson's therapy in the comfort of our own home has been so helpful. Thank you for giving us the tools and encouragement to keep our guy as active as possible!"

With new opportunities always on the horizon, Hudson isn't slowing down anytime soon. PT Nicole is optimistic that his therapy and activities will help him maintain independence for years to come.

"We should never put limits on kids and treat them any differently if they don't walk, talk, or act like us," said Nicole. "Hudson's journey is unique and unknown, but we'll take it a step at a time. We are so proud of all that he's been able to do!"

With Hudson's infectious energy, there's no telling which milestones Hudson will hit next!
